Why We Crave Space (and How to Find It Without a Holiday)

We talk about time as the thing we’re missing most. But often, what we’re really craving is space — the kind that lets us simply be, think freely, and reconnect with ourselves.
In the rush of daily life, our calendars fill, our thoughts scatter, and our energy drains. We tell ourselves: “I just need a break.” And sometimes that’s true. But other times, it’s less about escaping our environment and more about shifting our mindset within it.
My recent reminder
After a stretch of big changes and tension, I booked a last-minute trip with a friend. My plan? Sit by the pool with my book (A Little Life, which I’d been trying to finish for months).

But by day two, my feet were itching to move. I wanted to explore, to feel free. So we hiked along cliffs, wandered through villages, and somewhere in the in-between moments, I reached for my journal.
I reviewed my goals. I asked: Do these still matter to me?I reprioritised. I mapped out micro-actions for when I got home.
The trip didn’t “change my life.” But it gave me space to think, to feel, and to reconnect with where I’m going. That was enough to re-energise me.

Space without the suitcase
You don’t need three car rides, a plane, and a ferry to find that clarity. You can create that same reflective pause in everyday life:
Take a walk without your phone.
Sit in a café with a notebook.
Cook something from scratch.
Spend an hour talking with someone who asks you the right questions.
This last one? That’s coaching. A single 60-minute session can give you the space to check in with yourself, reset, and decide your next steps — without leaving your garden.
If you’re feeling stretched thin and craving room to breathe, it might not be more hours or miles you need… just more space.
